During a recent trip, we found ourselves in Primm, Nevada, with a little time to kill in the evening.
We happened across the old Herbst Trophy Truck, inactive and on display in the promenade between the Primm Valley Mall and the Primm Valley Resorts' main gambling floor.
The Herbst TT on display isn't the Herbst's first, or the last. This TT was used from 1997 up until recently--I believe 2008. The first TT owned by the Herbsts is still out there under the guidance of Scott Steinburger. The Herbsts are how campaigning a newer TT that was built largely in-house in their Huntington Beach, California, shop.
This Trophy Truck, built by Mike Smith, is significant because it is four-wheel drive. The front CV joints are monster-sized! They're a size 32 CV taken from a military application.
If you look closely at the brake assembly, you'll notice that the caliper is missing. Not shown are the axle housing with the 3rd member removed and the lack of a rear driveshaft. My conjecture is that parts were pulled that could be used as spares for the current truck.
Finally, the shocks on this truck were all built by Mike Smith. A bump zone was built into the front bypass shocks so that a hydraulic bump stop was not needed.
